What can we learn from ‘Shark Tank’ for E-commerce?

eShopBuddy Blog - Shark Tank | E-Commerce

We all are familiar with the new TV show ‘Shark Tank India’ which is a business reality show that was aired on Sony Network. The Reality show gained a lot of popularity among common man people as it gave a reality check for many who are not from a business background. Starting, one’s business has become dinner table conversation in Indian households. It gave an additional boost and confidence to our new generation who want to experiment and do not want to take traditional career paths.

The show’s concept is simple: there are seven investors known as “sharks” to whom an individual must pitch his/her business idea. If a shark likes a particular person’s idea, he or she will invest in their business in exchange for equity.

After watching this show, it is clear visible that if a person wishes to expand his or her business, he or she should establish an ecommerce website. The brands that came to pitch their business idea had a website, and the majority of the brands sold 70% of their products through their website or other e-commerce websites like Amazon or Flipkart. Whether it was a real estate company or a pet store, each business had its own e-commerce website.

The first pitch of Shark tank was a company named BluePine Industries, who are involved in manufacturing a wide range of food products like Frozen Veg Momos, Frozen Spring Rolls and Frozen Non Veg Momos. Majority of the sales(including profit) which they made were via their e-commerce store, this online website was helping them to sell momos all over India. This demonstrates that e-commerce can bring a drastic change in the growth of any business. There are thousands of momo carts in India, but BluePine Industries has grown significantly because of e-commerce.

Aditi Bhutia Madan founded the company in 2016, and they flooded the market in 2018. In just three years, the company was able to grow and come into the shark tank. They concentrated on the B2B model first, then came into the market for B2C with the help of their own ecommerce website.

BluePine is just an example, there are businesses like Beyond Snack(Kerala Wafers), Ariro(Wooden Toys), Caragreen(Eco-Friendly Boxes), Bamboo India(Bamboo Products), Let’s Try Foods (Healthy Food Products) Find Your Kicks(Online Sneaker Resale), Hair Originals(Hair Extension Product), Homemade Pickles From Jhajhi Achaar, Jain Shikanji, etc. which have benefited by going online.

This shows us what a significant impact e-commerce can do to a particular business. There is no option, but to get your products online if you are in the D2C space.
